The Anglican Communion developed from the Church of England. Today it unites thirty-eight provinces (national churches), who are juridically autonomous and yet linked by their way of being Christian. They are also in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury, who acts as their spiritual head. With the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox churches, and the churches of the Reformation, Anglicanism is one of the four great currents of Christianity.
